In a biography that reads like a travelogue-cum-mystery, Bryson once more teaches without preaching, and his witty and elegant writing remains as delightful as ever.
In this biography of William Shakespeare, Bryson doesnt add anything that is not already known. He doesnt draw miraculous conclusions. He doesnt make earth shattering claims and discoveries. What he does is a little more difficult than that.
Bryson compiles the well-known, and the less-known facts about the man we know as William Shakespeare, and combines these into a fast paced, chronological essay that is accessible to the layman reader. Spiced up with interesting trivia and often quirky statistics from the life and times of Shakespeare, English royalty, and the world of theatre, the book reads well for anyone with a passing curiosity in Shakespeare, drama, or London.
Brysons witty narrative is based on historical facts, records and literary figures, but is never complacent or pedantic. He freely admits that little is known about Shakespeare, the man. Overall, the book raises more questions than
it answers, yet, Brysons typical writing style takes the reader on an enjoyably lazy stroll around the streets of South Bank, London, dogging the footsteps of William Shakespeare, gentleman. Book Reviews Share Your Opinion. (0 posts)
